A lot of fanfiction authors wind up doing their own story lines using the same characters or exaggerated attributes of their interpretations of the characters.

With the fanfiction group I worked with, one looked at a sci-fi anime series. Within the fanfiction, those characters were part of circus, bdsm, mystery, and historical storylines.

Another series was about present day crime fighters. And the best fanfiction story I read with them set the characters in Vietnam war. Other authors retold Norse myth- based stories with them, boarding school stories, all kinds of stuff

Fanfiction is more so exploring character personalities, Expressing Interpretations, or trying to fill in (imagined) backstories

Rich-pompous-dominant and novice-naive-submissive fanfictions are very common. And they usually all end with the submissive having the real power because of their mind/emotions and the dominant having self-awareness of their weaknesses. Other common stories are Victorian era (ala Jane Austen setting) or slave/servant where the dominant saves the slave physically and then slowly helps them heal their mind as well.
